New blog: Everything GIS

I've started a new blog with a friend, specifically for the discussion of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) related technologies.

The new blog is called Everything GIS and is a joint blog with Nicola Smith, a friend of mine that works as the GIS co-ordinator for the county's Fire Service.

Any GIS-related articles (eg. about Google Maps/Earth) will now be posted to the new blog, but I'll probably post a quick cross-link here pointing to posts over there.

The new blog uses WordPress. I know, I said I wouldn't use it again, but it's just too easy and feature-rich and has things that I couldn't work out how to do myself, even with looking at the code (namely Atom/XML-RPC based posting). I may research other alternatives, as the speed of WordPress isn't great, but over-all I'm quite happy with it for that blog.

It's also the first site to be hosted on my new DreamHost account. I first went for a GoDaddy account, and then changed my mind the next day. I'm glad I did, DreatHost are great! They offer all kinds of features, like Subversion, Ruby on Rails, Shell access and even a Jabber server.

Portrait of the author

On weekdays I'm a Solution Architect at Nokia Siemens Networks, creating creative software solutions for mobile operators around the world.

In my spare time I'm an avid new technology fan, and constantly strive to find innovative uses for the new gadgets I manage to get my hands on. Most recently I've been investigating Mobile Codes, RFID and Home automation (mainly Z-Wave). With a keen eye for usability I'm attempting to create some cost-effective, DIY technology solutions which would rival even high-end retail products. The software I develop is usually released as Open Source.

I have a Finnish geek partner, so have begun the difficult task of learning Finnish.
